The Firm

HW Business Law LLP is an alternative business structure licensed to provide legal services. It is the fastest growing alternative business structure in the country and is part of a large progressive group of accountants. It provides legal business advice to owner managed businesses including corporate, commercial, commercial property, employment and finance advice. HWBL currently has five lawyers four of which are based in London and one in Birmingham. We are also currently recruiting for an additional corporate lawyer to be based in London.

Key objectives


  • To develop and manage relationships with key Haines Watts partners in the West Midlands and East Midlands Region;
  • To manage a range of commercial and development property, corporate and commercial matters from initial instruction through to matter conclusion both in the West Midlands, East Midlands and the London region;
  • To be actively involved in all business development opportunities and expand the HWBL legal practice in the West Midlands and the East Midlands.

  • Key duties:

    • Assisting and advising clients on:
      • corporate transactional matters, including business sales, acquisitions, restructures and MBOs;
      • Commercial matters, including commercial contracts, EMIs, intellectual property;
      • Non contentious employment law matters such as employment contracts, service agreements and settlement agreements
      • taking new leases and renewing leases, buying and selling commercial and development property, investment property structures and finance arrangements
    • Working with surveyors on property investment strategy, portfolio management, service charge liability and scrutiny, valuations, business rates management, rent reviews and renewal negotiations and dilapidation negotiations
    • Working with Tax and VAT teams to provide a full service on any property matters and corporate transactional matters
    • Giving estimates of costs to new clients and being responsible for managing costs throughout all matters
    • To take initial instructions for Sale and Purchase of commercial and development property matters
    • To liaise with clients, estate agents, commercial agents, mortgage lenders, business sale brokers, other professionals and opposing solicitors by telephone, post, e-mail or in person, as necessary, at every stage of the transaction
    • To be responsible for all file opening and AML procedures and to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements in relation to the same
    • To manage a range of property and corporate and commercial matters from initial instruction through to matter conclusion
    • To undertake any additional delegated tasks including dealing with pre exchange of contract work, title reports, searches, raising enquiries etc.
    • To manage post-exchange work and registrations, including completion statements
    • To manage post-completion work including stamping of documents, Registration and Scheduling of Deeds
    • To ensure the confidentiality of all the firm's and clients' documentation
    • To achieve agreed levels of time-recording (as appropriate)
    • To undertake any other tasks as may be required from time to time

    Key skills required

    • Ideally a qualified Solicitor with at least - 4 years' experience in property and corporate work but applications will be considered from those with alternative relevant qualifications or who can demonstrate equivalent skills and experience
    • Excellent knowledge of
      • commercial and development property processes and procedures,
      • corporate transactional work; and
      • general commercial law
    • Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively as part of a small, supportive team whilst taking responsibility for their own work
    • Effective oral and written communication skills
    • Pleasant and positive manner in dealing with colleagues and clients
    • Abil8ity to provide clear and pragmatic advice to, and deal confidently with individuals at all levels
    • Ability to evaluate a situation in the face of time constraints and react appropriately
    • Good time management, file organisation and personal organisation
    • Ability to work effectively and flexibly in a team
