Job Description

Our client who is a mid size independent PR firm Third City is on the hunt for a new Financial Controller to work with the agency's senior leadership team.

This is a broad, hands on position. The new hire - who will be responsible for the agency's management accountancy and financial controls - is likely to be qualified or part qualified with marcomms agency experience and a strong management accounts background. As well as mastering 'business as usual', the successful candidate will have the ambition to work with the senior team and a financial consultant in driving strategic growth programmes.

Third City is just 8 years old with 30 staff, an impressive track record and a blue chip corporate and consumer client list which includes BUPA, ING, Delta Airlines and eHarmony, plus a clutch of not for profit brands including Open University and Guide Dogs.

This is an exciting opportunity for a commercially minded and astute Financial Controller who is able to build rapport quickly and join a fast paced - yet established business - brimming with entrepreneurial and creative energy.

Depending on the candidate, statutory reporting functions may be part of the job scope or outsourced.

The outgoing Financial Controller has an assistant running purchase ledger and other finance data entry so the successful candidate will manage this person and are also likely to be responsible for the yet to be appointed Office Manager

The Financial Controller's main duties will be:

  • Part of the Agency's Senior Leadership team ( meet weekly)
  • Contribution to business operational and strategic decision making
  • Budgets, Forecasting and scenario planning
  • Financial requirements for tenders
  • Fee/rate card reviews and recommendations
  • Compiling Client contracts and staff contracts - including negotiation
  • Insurance renewals
  • Purchase Ledger
  • Bank/Credit card/Cash Card Reconciliations
  • Employee Expenses
  • Sales Invoices, and Credit control
  • Quarterly VAT Returns and EC Sales List
  • Annual Statutory Accounts, Corporation tax calculation and CT600/CT61 return
  • Annual PSA calculation & P11ds
  • Job Costing
  • Monthly Payroll, inc. pension scheme
  • Cash Flow Management
  • All bank matters and liaison with bank manager
  • Month end management accounts, inc. accruals, prepayments and Fixed asset depreciation
  • High end liaison with landlord /property management

Optional - with support from outside specialists

  • Company formation
  • Shareholder matters, inc. dividend paperwork
  • EMI scheme management
  • Complex contractual matters eg disputes
  • Strategic network expansion - UK and overseas
  • Mergers, acquisitions and disposals

The Financial Controller will have the below skills:

  • Previous experience of leading a Finance function
  • Ideally ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualified or part qualified
  • Experience and knowledge of the PR sector
  • Previous experience of staff management
  • Good working knowledge of Sage
  • Be driven and ambitious with the ability to want to grow the business
  • Excellent in verbal and written skills
  • Good attention to detail
  • Self-motived
  • Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team
