Due to growth we are recruiting for a full-time, (with part-time considered) Payroll Senior with some additional bookkeeping as and when required, to work within our Colchester office on the day to day running of a busy client payroll and bookkeeping portfolio, with general administration assistance for our clients. This is ideally suited to a payroll professional who has some bookkeeping experience working with large numbers of clients.

Duties, responsibilities and experience

Job Spec - Main responsibilities are within the payroll department:

  • Ensuring all payrolls and compliance are completed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Dealing with SMP, SSP, SPP, coding notices, P45, holidays and pensions.
  • Managing starters and leavers.
  • Calculation of pay rates/overtime/bonuses/holidays.
  • Managing CIS schemes.
  • Setting up of new PAYE schemes and tasks associated with acquiring a new client.
  • Liaising with clients, dealing with any queries they may have.

Job Spec - Bookkeeping:

  • Sales, purchases and nominal ledger management
  • Reconciling bank and credit card statements
  • Monthly review of debtors / creditors
  • Preparation of clients' VAT Returns, along with monthly or quarterly VAT reconciliations
  • Wages transactions and reconciliation of salaries and wages control accounts
  • Production of end of year trial balance, along with annual control account reconciliations.

Experience / requirements

  • Strong payroll and bookkeeping experience is essential, minimum 1-2 years.
  • Experience with IRIS Payroll Professional and Moneysoft Payroll a distinct advantage.
  • Payroll qualification advantageous.
  • Good excel and reporting skills.
  • Problem solver with a keen eye for detail, along with being highly organised.
  • Excellent communicator.
  • Understanding of PAYE, Limited Companies and CIS preferred but not essential.
  • Experience of using Xero, Receipt Bank, Sage Line 50 and Quickbooks


  • GSCE Maths and English Language both at grade C or above

The successful candidate will have the following skills:

  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Good attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Ability to work on own initiative and manage workload
  • Good IT skills including use of Excel

Salary is competitive but will depend on experience and training requirements.
