Position: R&D Tax Manager

Location: Northampton

Job Type: Full Time, Permanent

Salary: £55,000 - £60,000 per annum

About the role:

Haines Watts' approach is to ensure we provide our clients with the best talent for each service. That's why we structure the business to meet our clients' needs. We have a large team dedicated to the optimisation of Research & Development (R&D) including former HMRC employees, engineers and consultants. Due to a huge client demand we are therefore looking for an R&D Manager to join our team.

The role will entail;

  • Helping to identify and develop new opportunities, including involvement in pitching for work and working with our sales and marketing team
  • Managing a portfolio of clients and project delivery across these
  • Preparation of R&D claims for submission to HMRC
  • Managing client engagements and developing strong relationships
  • Preparing responses to or liaising with HMRC with regard to queries they have on R&D claims on behalf of our clients
  • Preparing advice to clients on tax credits and RDEC
  • Networking and representing Haines Watts as a wider business
  • Willing to gain awareness of other service lines and their value to the business

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strong knowledge and experience of the UK R&D tax incentive regimes including involvement in SME and RDEC claims
  • Awareness of different claim methodologies and experience of industry-specific issues
  • Demonstrate excellent R&D technical tax abilities, combined with business and sales experience.
  • Writing and reviewing compelling technical project reports to bring out the key technical factors of client projects to support R&D claims in all sectors.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to produce technical and costing documentation to ensure the submission of robust and eligible claims to HM Revenue and Customs
  • Knowledge of accounting treatment and wider tax issues surrounding tax credits
  • Experience of responding to HMRC queries on R&D claims would be preferable
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate confidently and knowledgeably with both HW team members at all levels, as well as with clients
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop internal networks and client relationships
  • Demonstrable experience of successful client management
  • Able to operate autonomously and manage own workload
  • Taking advantage of new opportunities for learning, sharing new knowledge, being intellectually agile and thinking creatively
  • Proven ability to work well in a team, including supporting the development of less experienced members of the team
  • Work closely with the Regional Head of R&D to support other offices and their individual needs, in line with the regional growth strategy
  • Experience with working at higher management levels, with CEO's, MD's and company founders.

About you:

  • ATT qualified, as a minimum, CTA would be beneficial
  • AAT/ACCA would also be considered beneficial, however not essential
  • Solid UK corporation tax experience, ideally obtained within practice and R&D
  • Strong report writing skills are essential for the role
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Experience of managing and controlling workflows in a practice environment
  • Ability to confidently work alone but also be a team player
  • Excellent time management
  • The ability to work under pressure, to deadlines and respond promptly to requests
  • Be proficient in Outlook and Word
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel to an advanced level
  • Experience liaising with HMRC on a tax or R&D basis
